In 1 Corinthians Chapter 12, Paul talks about the spiritual gifts from the Holy Spirit. He also discussed the body of Christ and how each believer plays a crucial role regardless of their position in the church.
Why the Spirit is Necessary
Paul told the people in 1 Corinthians Chapter 12 that they were once Gentiles going about in their pagan ways by worshiping idols and straying away from God. However, it was through the Holy Spirit that they proclaimed that Christ is Lord. It was only through the Spirit that they were able to do this.
Without the spirit, Paul said, they would not know or have knowledge of Christ. Through the Spirit, there are different gifts. Even though there are many gifts, there is only one Spirit. This is much like how there are different divinities, but only one God.
Gifts of the Holy Spirit
These gifts from the Holy Spirit all work for the glory of God. Each man who receives the Spirit also has a gift which is manifested in him. There are gifts of wisdom, knowledge, faith, discernment, healing, prophesy, tongues and other things that come when someone receives the Holy Spirit and turns from their sinful ways in order to follow Christ.
All of these gifts work under one Spirit and come together for one purpose – to glorify God. All the gifts are different in their characteristics, yet it cannot be that there is more than one Spirit since only the Holy Spirit gives these gifts. The gifts which are given by the Holy Spirit should not be coveted and are to be used in an excellent way.
The Body of Christ
This is much like the physical body and how it has many members. It has limbs and other parts which work together to form one body. Paul said in 1 Corinthians Chapter 12 that when one member of the body suffers, every member feels the pain. On the other hand, when one member rejoices, it means that all will rejoice with it, too.
